Service Industry News

For more than 29 years, Service Industry News has served as the voice of the pool and spa service professional. A twice monthly newspaper, the staff covers featured stories on equipment installation, trouble-shooting and repair; water chemistry and business issues facing the industry; and news pertaining to the interests of the pool and spa technician.

In addition to the newspaper, we have produced three technical books used throughout the industry as training and reference guides. The Professional Pool Technicians' Guide to ChlorineGuide to Alternative Sanitizers and the Guide to pH, Alkalinity, Water Testing and Water Balance are compiled from articles that originally appeared in our newspaper.

We've also updated and republished an industry classic on pool care, Charlie Taylor's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Pool Care. This light, easy-to understand and illustrated book has long been a part of any complete library on pool care. Now, it's also available in Spanish!

Pool Industry Expo, an ideal trade show

While West Coast service professionals are literally knee deep in their pools during this the busiest time of the year, one thought is keeping them going: That’s the picturesque setting of Monterey, California, once again host of the of education/vacation of Pool Industry Expo, scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-27.

Perched upon the California coast, between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Monterey is without a doubt one of the world’s most beautiful, fun and fascinating destinations.

It’s a natural showcase of breathtaking seascapes, amusing sea otters, sculptured cypress trees, sandy white beaches and kaleidoscope sunsets.

It is a sports enthusiast’s dream, with 18 championship golf courses, tennis, sailing, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, sun and surf.

And there’s more to do and see than you can imagine, including Cannery Row’s shops, restaurants, an old-fashioned carousel and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the West Coast’s largest marine exhibit.

There’s also Fisherman’s Wharf, Carmel-by-the-Sea, fresh seafood, gourmet dining, vintage peninsula wines and more.

Clearly, few destinations offer the quality and variety of environment, scenery, recreation, entertainment, lodging and dining that you’ll find in Monterey.

But add to that the opportunity to learn the pool and spa service and repair industry inside out in just three days, and one quickly sees why the organizers have a 28-year history of success.

While the seminar schedule is still being finalized and will be published as soon as it is available, the show will offer some 96 hours of educational and hands-on training, all specifically tailored to the needs of the service professional.

In addition to classroom training, the show will feature exhibits from the leading manufacturers and suppliers to the Northern California pool and spa service market and the opportunity to talk shop with a number of experts in the field.

While touring the exhibits, show-goers will find hundreds of manufacturer-sponsored promotional giveaways, and show organizers will once again offer a drawing for a total of $2,000 in cash prizes and a one-week Hawaiian vacation for two.

The host hotel for the event is the Marriott Monterey, connected to the Monterey Conference Center, where the exhibits will be on display.

Both are located in the heart of historic downtown and just steps away from the Monterey Peninsula.

A special group rate of $194 per night plus tax for a deluxe single or double room is available.

Reservations can be made online at https://resweb.passkey.com/go/poolindustryexpo2014.

Numerous other hotel and motel accommodations are available at varying prices, many within walking distance of the Monterey Conference Center.

Also in connection with the show will be the annual T-shirt promotion, where participants send in a picture of themselves wearing a prior year’s Pool Industry Expo T-shirt from the farthest-away location.

Past winners of the $100 prize have come from all over the globe, and the bar has indeed been set high this year.

Organizers are already in possession of Ernie Wong’s entry taken in front of the Zagreb Cathedral in Croatia. A quick Google check reveals a distance of 6,108 miles from California to Croatia.

The deadline for entries is Sept. 1. Send in your photo — which should leave no doubt as to the location of where it was taken — to Pool Industry Expo, P.O. Box 6953, San Rafael, CA 94903, or send your entry via email to
