For more than 29 years, Service Industry News has served as the voice of the pool and spa service professional. As season nears, safety issues take forefront

There is an old saying that safety never takes a holiday and danger never takes a vacation.  Appropriately, safety is the focus of the pool and spa industry as we move forward into the upcoming swim season. 

In February, the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals announced that state and local jurisdictions that adopt the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) will be eligible for grant money to help implement education programs for enforcement officials, pool builders and the public. The ISPSC is an up-to-date and all- inclusive list of standards governing the design, construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of swimming pools, spas and aquatic facilities. 

The ISPSC was developed jointly by APSP and the International Code Council to establish the minimum requirements for newly constructed public and residential pools, spas and hot tubs. Those who have adopted the ISPSC have already exceeded the requirements in the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. Access to the code is available for purchase at the APSP website: Online at www.apsp.org.

A main focus of the code is enforcing enclosures to pool and spa entries and multiple or no-main-drain requirements. The Pool Safety Grant Program is then intended to assist state and local governments in programs aimed at preventing drowning and drain entrapments of children in pools and spas.  States and local jurisdictions could apply for as much as $250,000 to defray the costs of training pool construction, installation, and pool service companies about the standards under the swimming pool and safety law. 

It is anticipated that grants will be awarded this May, which is coincidentally National Water Safety Month. The importance of safety around water can never be overstated, and as the industry’s first line of defense in guarding against unsafe conditions around pools and spas, service professionals should be armed with the latest information on safety mandates.
