Show season’s upon us — Let’s roll!
By Marcelle Dibrell
With winter bearing down in much of the country and many pools closed for the season, pool service professionals have entered the slower half of their work year.
But the industry takes advantage of these cooler months by presenting its members with countless educational opportunities, much of them occurring at the regional trade shows presented from January through April.
The knowledge gained at these shows can mean increased opportunities to make money when the swim season returns. That is the winning sales pitch offered by organizers of the numerous conferences scheduled in the coming months.
It is hard to argue the point when it comes to pool and spa service.
After all, pool service professionals operate as water chemists, and must be aware of a wide range of water sanitation and balance parameters, even as they must stay up to date on the ever-changing equipment technologies.
Small-business owners must stay current on everything from licensing and legal matters to contracts and accounting.
It is no wonder that so many service professionals take advantage of the educational opportunities available at the industry’s regional trade shows.
Continuing education units are also a bonus, and the certification courses cover a wealth of topics. More and more commercial and residential customers require that their pool tech show their certification credentials for risk management and liability purposes. The certification helps meet consumer demand for trusted training and accreditation.
And in addition to a wide range of seminars, attending trade shows is an easy way to get hands-on experience with the latest equipment and products in the industry. Colorful exhibit halls feature the latest innovations in the industry, and service technicians are presented with an exclusive opportunity to handle the latest items.
For this special regional trade show issue we provide information from seven shows.
They include four shows sponsored by affiliates of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals. These are the Mid-American Pool & Spa Show, Jan. 15-18 in Indianapolis, Ind.; The Pool & Spa Show, Jan. 23-25 in Atlantic City, N.J.; the Everything Under the Sun Show, Feb. 9-10 in Orlando, Fla.; and the Southwest Pool & Spa Show, Jan 17-20 in Houston, Texas.
Other major shows are also scheduled across the country in early 2018, including the Desert Pool & Spa Show, Feb. 1-3 in Phoenix, Ariz.; the National Plasterers Council Annual Conference, Feb. 7-9 in San Diego, Calif.; the Western Pool & Spa Show, March 15-17, in Long Beach, Calif.; and the National Drowning Prevention Education Conference, April 3-7 in Tampa, Fla.
In this special issue of Service Industry News, we will also cover the IPSSA’s Region 7 Table-Top Show, on Jan 27 in San Diego, Calif. Later next year, we’ll cover the Pool Industry Expo, (Sept. 27-29) in Monterey, Calif., and the International Pool, Spa, & Patio Expo, (Oct. 31-Nov 2), in Las Vegas, Nev.
Because these shows occur later in the year, they will not be covered in this issue, but watch for details as they approach.
