Service Industry News

For more than 29 years, Service Industry News has served as the voice of the pool and spa service professional. A twice monthly newspaper, the staff covers featured stories on equipment installation, trouble-shooting and repair; water chemistry and business issues facing the industry; and news pertaining to the interests of the pool and spa technician.

In addition to the newspaper, we have produced three technical books used throughout the industry as training and reference guides. The Professional Pool Technicians' Guide to ChlorineGuide to Alternative Sanitizers and the Guide to pH, Alkalinity, Water Testing and Water Balance are compiled from articles that originally appeared in our newspaper.

We've also updated and republished an industry classic on pool care, Charlie Taylor's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Pool Care. This light, easy-to understand and illustrated book has long been a part of any complete library on pool care. Now, it's also available in Spanish!

Glacier Coolers’ ‘Iceberg’ will chill hot pool water

The Iceberg GPC-210 pool cooler by Glacier Coolers LLC of Scottsdale, Ariz., efficiently reduces water temperature in pools of up to 30,000 gallons.

This low-amperage unit employs an electric-fan cooling system that, unlike a heat pump, requires no freon or gas, so it is inexpensive to operate. The Iceberg circulates pressurized pool water over a medium and heat is removed by the air flow of the fan. Chilled water is then pumped back into the pool through pool returns. On average, it takes 12-to-14 hours to decrease pool water temperatures by 10-to-15 degrees.

The unit runs with the pool pump, and is easily incorporated into existing plumbing and automated control systems. Optional temperature controls are available for manual pool systems. The Iceberg comes with a one-year limited warranty.

For more information, contact Glacier Pool Coolers LLC, Dept. SI, 10310 N. 135th Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85259. Telephone 480-272-7700. Or visit the company online at www.glacierpoolcoolers.com.

Protect against drowning with RJE’s ‘Safety Turtle’

RJE Technologies, Inc. of Irvine, Calif. offers the Safety Turtle personal immersion alarm as the ultimate way to protect from the danger of drowning.

The Safety Turtle Alarm is attached to a band that is worn around the wrist. When the Turtle is immersed in water a base station registers a warning sound that repeats until the system is reset. Continuous sounding of the alarm makes this device unique.

With the exception of some saltwater limitations, the Safety Turtle works with any pool, hot tub, pond, river, or lake. Both the wristband and the base station are portable, so the Safety Turtle can be used anywhere. This is a great feature where unfamiliar surroundings and less security tend to increase the risk of accidents.
