Specialty chems complete your supplies

Specialty chemicals can play a useful role in the maintenance and care of pools and spas, going beyond chlorine and bromine. These specialized compounds are designed to address specific challenges that arise in aquatic environments, ensuring water quality, safety, and overall enjoyment for users.

One of the key functions of specialty chemicals is to regulate the pH level of the water. Maintaining the proper pH balance is essential for a comfortable and safe swimming experience. If the pH level is too high, it can lead to skin and eye irritation for swimmers, while a low pH level can corrode pool equipment and surfaces. Specialty pH adjusters are formulated to precisely control pH levels, providing a comfortable and safe environment for all who use the pool or spa.

Furthermore, specialty chemicals include powerful sanitizers that work in conjunction with, or sometimes in place of, traditional chlorine or bromine. These alternatives cater to individuals who may have sensitivities to these standard sanitizing agents. For instance, mineral-based sanitizers utilize elements like copper and silver ions to effectively kill bacteria and algae, offering a gentler option for those with skin sensitivities.

Algae growth is a common challenge faced by pool and spa technicians. Specialty algicides are designed to combat this problem. These compounds target and eliminate algae spores, preventing the formation of unsightly green or black blooms. By incorporating algicides into a regular maintenance routine, pool and spa professionals can keep their water crystal clear and visually inviting.

Specialty chemicals also include clarifiers and flocculants, which help to enhance water clarity. Clarifiers work by binding together small particles, making them easier to filter out. Flocculants cause suspended particles to clump together, forming larger, easier-to-remove masses that can be vacuumed or filtered out. These chemicals are particularly useful after heavy usage or a bout of bad weather, restoring water clarity swiftly and effectively.

Stain and scale control is another vital aspect of pool and spa maintenance. Specialty chemicals in this category are formulated to prevent the buildup of minerals on pool surfaces. This is especially important for areas with hard water, where high mineral content can lead to unsightly stains and scale deposits. Stain and scale control chemicals act as a barrier, preventing minerals from adhering to the pool or spa’s surfaces.

Moreover, specialty chemicals cater to specific types of pools and spas. For example, saltwater pools require unique products to maintain their balance and prevent corrosion of equipment. Specialty chemicals for saltwater pools ensure that the water remains safe and comfortable for swimmers while preserving the integrity of the pool system. A saltwater cell protector can be used to help prevent mineral adhesion and scale buildup by forming a protective layer on the salt cell. Saltwater cell cleaners are available to remove scale and mineral deposits that can accumulate on the salt cell, helping it operate at peak efficiency.

For many service firms, specialty chemicals are indispensable for the effective and efficient maintenance of pools and spas. They address a range of specific challenges, from regulating pH levels and sanitizing the water to combating algae growth and enhancing water clarity. By utilizing these specialized compounds, pool professionals can get an edge over their competition.

This issue of Service Industry News will take a close look at some of major types and brands available for pool and spa care.
