MicroGlass: Cutting edge pool finish

Plaster pools, prevalent in backyards and public spaces across the nation, have long been the goto choice for their simplicity and timeless appeal. Plaster, being the predominant material in pool construction, offers a classic and smooth aesthetic that almost defines the essence of a swimming pool.

But whether in residential or public settings, plaster pools are susceptible to a variety of assaults, including discolorations, staining, and the gradual wear and tear from chemical exposure and daily use. All of these issues prompt a consideration of the protective measures that can be applied to these pools.

In recent years, the traditional method of painting plaster pools has fallen out of favor among professionals in the pool maintenance industry. While the exact reasons may vary, a notable factor is the limited lifespan of traditional paint in the demanding environment of a swimming pool. Paint is inherently vulnerable to wear and tear. Painted pool surfaces often succumb to issues such as chipping, peeling, and fading, accelerated by the relentless assault of sunlight, temperature variations, chemical treatments, and the mechanical stresses of regular pool activities.

That’s why in recent years innovations in hardeners, coatings, and resurfacing materials have emerged.

These advancements mark a departure from traditional paint’s limitations, offering sturdier solutions that address the practical needs of maintaining plaster pools. The industry now emphasizes coatings that not only improve aesthetics but also withstand the challenges posed by the pool environment.

This change reflects a commitment to providing pool owners with longlasting solutions, minimizing the need for frequent maintenance and refinishing.

From cutting- edge silicate hardeners like MicroGlas s , which fundamentally alters the composition of pool surfaces, to advanced formulations like Rebound or ecoFINISH, each designed for superior durability and chemical resistance, the options are diverse and cater to various needs.

In general, the goal is an aesthetically pleasing pool that lasts a long time. But some of the resurfacing options bring additional advantages.

Microglass, for example, is a plaster hardener, which enhances the durability and longevity of plaster. ecoFINISH is a polyethylene polymer coating that aims to transcend the limitations of traditional materials. It offers exceptional durability, chemical resistance, and environmental conscientiousness. It also provides a pH-neutral surface, reducing the leaching of harmful chemicals. Rebound features a blend of liquid polymers and thermoplastic granules. Rebound is known for its softness, slip resistance, and simple installation, offering a comfortable and durable pool surface.

Then there are paint-like coatings, which really aren’t paints at all.

Epoxy coatings are specialized formulations distinct from traditional paint, offering advantages such as chemical resistance, durability, and ease of maintenance. Well-applied and maintained epoxy coatings can last for a decade or more.

Ceramic coatings are technologically advanced finishes with benefits such as stain resistance, chemical resistance, algae resistance, durability, easy maintenance, aesthetic appeal, and longevity. Ceramic coatings contribute to the overall enhancement of pool surfaces.

This special issue of Service Indust ry News explores the transformative impact of MicroGlass.

MicroGlass, a cutting-edge silicate hardener developed by Oxium Water Technologies, is making significant strides in the pool industry.

Let’s take a closer look at the transformative impact of MicroGlass, its scientific underpinnings, application processes, industry adoption, and the versatile solutions it offers to both new and existing pools.
