A chemical incident this June at Brimhall Aquatic Complex in Mesa, Arizona, resulted in seven injured and the pool closed.
Accordingtoacityofficialstatement: “Mesa’s Parks and Recreation Department experienced a chemical incident at the Brimhall Aquatic Complex. City staff immediately evacuated the campus while Mesa Fire and Medical Department was called to the scene to assist with the emergency response. The incident was upgraded to a first alarm to add additional units, and Hazmat was called to the scene. Paramedics treated seven patients, including five Mesa employees and two program participants. They were transported to local hospitals for additional treatment.”
Mesa Fire and Medical Department crews remained on the scene working alongside the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. A hazmat disposal company was also brought in to clean the site.
Parents were notified of the incident and changes to upcoming activities. The Mesa Parks and Recreation camp that operates out of the Brimhall campus was relocated.
The Mesa Parks and Recreation Department was investigating the cause of the hazardous situation.
