An Indiana family and their young friend were hospitalized after suffering serious electrical shocks while swimming in their backyard pool.
Five people including a married couple, their 16-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter, and the daughter’s friend, were badly injured when an exposed electrical wire made contact with the swimming pool.
The incident occurred in Logansport, Indiana, on August 25 and began when the group felt a vibration in the water.
“According to the report, they felt a vibration in the water, and the dad yelled to shut the sump pump off,” said Travis Yike, Logansport chief of police.
Authorities reported that a pump wire near the pool’s ladder was pinched, causing a protective cover to break and expose the wire. The wire touched the water and shocked the family.
Yike said that the 16-year-old son’s heroic acts may have saved the group. The boy works as a lifeguard and reportedly pulled his injured family members and his sister’s friend out of the pool.
“I do want to give accolades to that young man that was in the pool when this happened,” Yike said. “And he was also injured but took it upon himself once the power was shut off to jump out and recognize what was going on and save his dad and his sister and his sister’s friend’s lives. If it wasn’t for the heroic acts of a 16-year-old juvenile that was involved in this, it may have turned out a lot different.”
According to reports, two of the victims weren’t responsive when paramedics arrived. All were rushed to the hospital with different levels of injury, but all are recovering.
“It’s an unfortunate accident, but fortunately everyone is doing OK,” Yike said.
