A three-alarm fire severely damaged a Frisco, Texas, pool supply store. The incident was reported by a company employee at 7:44 a.m. on September 25 at Texas Pool Supply, and is believed to have started on a pallet of chemicals stored outside the building, according to a press release from the City of Frisco.
Eight employees were in the building at the time of the fire. An employee was about to load chemicals onto a truck and saw the fire.
“A company employee noticed a vapor,” said Chief Kelly Kistner, Fire Marshal, Frisco Fire Department. “A fire and explosion followed. A nearby truck and the company’s building caught fire. But it’s important to note, damage to the interior is limited thanks to the building’s sprinkler system.”
Seventy-eight first responders, including those with Frisco Fire, Frisco Police, and Frisco Public Works departments, were at the scene.
As a precaution, officials ordered people in the area to shelter in place at 8:25 a.m. because chlorine (trichlor and sodium dichlor) was burning.
“Early on with the large smoke plume, we had people who stated they were smelling things,” Kistner said. “So, in order to keep everybody safe, we wanted to make sure that we put that in place.”
The order was lifted at 9:28 a.m. when the fire was out.
Ten first responders, including three firefighters and seven police officers, were taken to the hospital for inhalation exposure.
“We discovered some of our first responders developed symptoms they didn’t start the day with,” said Lee Glover, Frisco Fire Chief. “So we transported them to a hospital as a precautionary measure.”
They were all released later that day.
