Service techs need specialty chemicals

Thorough service professionals are constantly seeking effective solutions to ensure optimal water quality and cleanliness. While traditional sanitizers and balancing chemicals remain fundamental to pool care, specialty chemicals have gained prominence for their ability to enhance pool maintenance efficiency and address specific challenges. From algae growth to scale buildup and organic contamination, specialty chemicals can contribute to a better swimming experience for users.

One of the most persistent challenges in pool maintenance is controlling algae growth. While sanitizers like chlorine are essential for killing bacteria and preventing algae, specialty algicides offer targeted solutions for managing and preventing algae blooms. These algicides come in various formulations, including copper- based and quaternary ammonium compounds, each designed to effectively eliminate different types of algae.

But another way to handle algae is to prevent it from growing in the first place. One option could include lowering phosphate levels (an important nutrient for algae growth). Another option is lowering inappropriately high cyanuric acid levels that can reduce chlorine efficacy. There are specialty chemicals that do these things.

In many regions, hard water presents a significant challenge for pool maintenance, leading to scale buildup on pool surfaces and equipment. Specialty scale inhibitors, often containing phosphonates or polyphosphates, work by binding calcium and other minerals in the water, preventing them from precipitating out and forming hard deposits. This approach to scale prevention reduces the need for difficult and time-consuming acid washes, saving service professionals valuable time and resources. Additionally, specialty stain removers can target specific types of stains, such as those caused by metals or organic materials, ensuring that pools maintain their aesthetic appeal.

Maintaining crystal-clear water is a hallmark of good pool care, and specialty clarifiers play a critical role in achieving this goal. These products, often composed of organic or inorganic compounds, work by coagulating tiny particles in the water, allowing them to be more easily captured by the pool filter. By reducing cloudiness and improving water clarity, clarifiers help create a more inviting swimming environment and enhance overall customer satisfaction. Service professionals can recommend these products during routine maintenance or when visibility issues arise, ensuring the pool remains visually appealing and safe for swimmers.

And on a related note, organic contaminants, such as oils, lotions, and debris, can create unsightly scum lines and cloudiness in pool water. Specialty enzymes are increasingly utilized in pool maintenance to break down these organic materials.

By using enzyme-based products, service professionals can reduce the reliance on traditional sanitizers while effectively managing organic load.

Enzymes help prevent scum buildup along the waterline and minimize the formation of chloramines, which can cause unpleasant odors and eye irritation.

This not only improves the swimming experience but also enhances the overall efficiency of the pool’s sanitation process.

Integrating specialty chemicals into your service calls can allow you to optimize chemical use, which can actually lead to cost savings.

Service professionals who utilize specialty chemicals not only improve their operational efficiency but also enhance customer satisfaction by ensuring that pools remain clean, safe, and inviting for swimmers.

As the pool maintenance industry continues to evolve, the strategic use of specialty chemicals is a key component in maintaining high standards of water quality.

This issue of Service Industry News will take a closer look at some of the products that are out there.
