Chitosan — An exceptional water clarifier

Chitosan is a biopolymer derived from chitin, which is a natural compound found in the shells of crustaceans like shrimp and crabs. It is known for its exceptional ability to clarify and condition water.

In pool water care, chitosan is utilized as a coagulant and flocculant. Here's how it works: Coagulation: Chitosan has positively charged molecules. When added to pool water, these positively charged molecules attract and bind with negatively charged particles, such as dirt, debris, and other fine particles suspended in the water.

This process, known as coagulation, causes these small particles to clump together, forming larger, removable masses. Flocculation: Once coagulation has occurred, the resulting clumps, now known as floc, still need to be removed from the water. This is where flocculation comes in. Chitosan helps to agglomerate the floc, making it larger and heavier. This facilitates its settling to the bottom of the pool or makes it easier to be captured by the pool's filtration system.

The use of chitosan in pool water care offers several advantages: 1. Natural and Biodegradable: Chitosan is derived from natural sources, making it an environmentally friendly option for pool water treatment. It is also biodegradable, and will break down naturally over time.

2. Effective at Low Dosages: Chitosan is highly effective even at relatively low dosages, which means you don't need to use large amounts to achieve the desired results.

3. Non- Toxic: Chitosan is considered safe for humans and animals when used as directed. Unlike some chemical clarifiers, it doesn't introduce harmful chemicals into the pool.

4. pH Neutral: Chitosan is typically pH neutral, means it won't significantly alter the pH level of the pool water.

5. Compatible with Other Treatment Methods: Chitosan can be used in conjunction with other pool water treatment methods, such as chlorine or saltwater systems.

It's important to note that while chitosan is effective for coagulation and flocculation, it is not effective in disinfection or algae control. Therefore, it is often used in conjunction with other pool water treatment methods to create a comprehensive water care program.

As with any pool treatment product, it's crucial to follow manufacturer instructions for proper dosage and application to ensure safe and effective use.
