Unrelated fires have destroyed a pair of residential portable hot tubs in Tennessee.

The occupants of a North Knox County home reported hearing an explosion before they discovered their hot tub and the roof of its gazebo engulfed in flames. The incident, which occurred on March 12, burned the hot tub to the ground and damaged the gazebo, but crews were able to extinguish the fire and prevent the home 20 feet away from being damaged.

In a separate incident, a portable hot tub caught fire on March 14 at a Rutherford County, Tennessee, home when an unattended firepit sent sparks to nearby vegetation growing on the fence.

Investigators said that elevated wind conditions accelerated the spread of the fire.

The Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents about the dangers of open burning during windy conditions, stating that outdoor fires should not be left unattended. At least one person should be at the burn site for the entire time of the burn. The office also said several home fires this year were attributed to “open burning situations gone wrong.”

The office also reminded residents that a burn permit is required from October 15 through May 15 from the Tennessee Division of Forestry for all debris and proscribed fires.
