Pool water tests all have limitations

Visual color matching has long been the standard in pool and spa water testing. Whether using test strips or DPD drop kits, service technicians often find themselves squinting at a color chart, trying to decide if the pink is really 3.0 ppm or just close to 2.5.

Color matching tests are useful, especially for quick checks. But understanding their limitations is key. When accuracy matters, don’t rely on your eyeballs alone, especially when better tools are available.

That’s because color-based testing isn’t always as straightforward as it seems. In fact, many of the challenges it presents can lead to inaccurate readings that could lead to poor water quality. There are a number of reasons why.

Lighting makes a big difference. One of the biggest issues in color matching is inconsistent lighting. A sample viewed in bright sunlight may appear much lighter than the same sample viewed in the shade or under a garage light. LED lights can distort hues, and yellow-tinted safety goggles can shift color perception altogether. Always perform visual comparisons in consistent, neutral lighting — ideally outdoors but out of direct sunlight.

Human eyes aren’t the same, and some may perceive color variations differently. In fact, color vision varies significantly from person to person. Furthermore, about 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have some form of color deficiency, usually red-green. Even among those with normal vision, age, fatigue, or eye strain can affect how colors are perceived. Some techs might consistently “read high” on pH because their eyes see more red in the sample. Others might under-read chlorine because the pink doesn’t look dark enough to them. If multiple technicians service the same pool, have them compare notes — or better yet, standardize testing with digital tools.

Reagent colors fade over time. Another issue is reagent degradation. Old or improperly stored reagents may not develop full color, leading to pale or incorrect shades. This is especially common with DPD chlorine tests or phenol red pH indicators. If the pink never looks right, even when you’re sure chlorine is present, weak reagents could be the problem. Replace reagents regularly and store them away from heat and sunlight. Don’t rely on kits that haven’t been refreshed in a year or more.

Test vials may be dirty or scratched. Even clean water can appear discolored if the test cell is scratched, foggy, or stained from previous tests. Stains from copper or high sanitizer levels can tint the plastic or glass, skewing the result. Be sure to regularly clean or replace test vials. A scratched vial is a silent saboteur of accurate readings. Rinse test cells with pool water — not tap water — between every test. Regularly clean vials with mild acid or vinegar to remove buildup. Replace scratched or cloudy cells.

Some tests match gradients — not exact colors. Most color charts don’t provide exact matches. Instead, they show a gradient of values — like 7.2, 7.4, 7.6 pH. When your sample falls in between two shades, you have to estimate. This estimation introduces subjectivity, especially with subtle shifts in tone. Practice improves estimation, but know when to switch to a more precise method if accurate dosing is critical.

And don’t forget operator errors, distractions, and external factors.

• You’re testing pH while answering a client’s question. Then you forget how many drops you added. Or you accidentally grab the wrong reagent bottle. Distractions are a real hazard when testing pool water in backyards or busy commercial spaces. Create a simple, repeatable routine. Organize your test kit , double-check labels before adding drops and avoid multitasking.

• Strong wind can blow away test strips or powder reagents. Sunlight can fade test strip pads or distort colors during comparison. These environmental factors can seriously affect test accuracy. Solution: Use a shaded area; Use a clipboard or your body to shield your test kit from wind. When it’s especially gusty, use a mobile workstation in your vehicle.

• You have limited time at each stop. Time pressure is one of the biggest real-world obstacles. When you only have minutes to complete testing and treatment you need to prioritize. At minimum, test chlorine and pH. If problems are suspected — or if the client has been having water issues — schedule extra time for a full test and use digital meters or multi-parameter kits to streamline the process.

• Unexpected water conditions. Sometimes the water is murky, green, or chemically overloaded. High chlorine can bleach out indicators. High metals can tint the water sample. In these cases, traditional testing methods might not give reliable results. Know the limitations of your test kits. Use DPD-FAS titration when chlorine is high. Pre-filter the water or dilute the sample in extreme conditions. Don’t hesitate to retest if something seems off.

In the field, conditions are rarely perfect. But with good habits, smart tool choices, and an eye for common pitfalls, pool techs can deliver reliable results in even the most unpredictable environments. The key is consistency—and knowing when your test is telling the truth, and when it’s time to take a second look.
