Strange test results? What to check

Every pool pro has experienced it: A test result that just doesn’t add up. Maybe the chlorine level reads zero right after shocking, or the pH won’t budge no matter how much acid or base is added.

Before blaming the pool, it’s wise to take a closer look at the testing process itself.

Troubleshooting errors in water testing starts with understanding the most common sources of inaccuracy — and how to prevent them.

1. Expired or Contaminated Reagents. Testing chemicals don’t last forever. Reagents exposed to heat, sunlight, or moisture can degrade, leading to weak or inconsistent reactions. Chlorine reagents, especially, are sensitive and can lose effectiveness quickly. Fix: Check expiration dates regularly and store kits in a cool, dry place. Replace reagents at the beginning of each season or after a particularly hot summer.

2. Cross-Contamination Between Tests. Reusing testing equipment without rinsing can introduce unwanted chemicals into your sample. A little acid left in a vial can throw off your alkalinity reading. Or chlorine residue can alter pH or calcium hardness tests. Fix: Always rinse test cells and droppers thoroughly with pool water between tests — not tap water, which might contain interfering substances.

3. Incorrect Sample Size. Using too much or too little water in the test cell can distort results. Even a few milliliters off can change the reading, especially in titration-based tests like DPD-FAS. Fix: Use the correct water level as indicated by fill lines. If the line is worn off, use a replacement vial or mark it again.

4. Poor Lighting Conditions. Most visual tests rely on matching colors to a chart. If you’re working in dim light or direct sunlight, the color match may be way off. Fix: Stand in neutral or shaded light when comparing colors. Or better yet, move to a consistent indoor environment or use a digital reader for better accuracy.

5. Misinterpreting Combined Chlorine. Many techs forget to subtract free chlorine from total chlorine to determine combined chlorine. This value is crucial — it reveals whether chloramines are forming, which cause odor and irritation. Fix: Always perform both free and total chlorine tests if you’re using DPD. Subtract FC from TC to get combined chlorine (CC).

6. Not Accounting for Interference. Some pools contain substances — like biguanides, high metals, or phosphate removers — that can interfere with standard testing. These may cause false high or low readings. Fix: Know what chemicals are in your client’s pool. If results don’t align with expectations, investigate potential chemical interactions.

7. Inconsistent Technique. Shaking the test vial too much (or not enough), adding drops too quickly, or counting titration drops incorrectly are all small mistakes that add up. Fix: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely. Consistency leads to accuracy.

In the field, not every strange test result is a mystery. Most of the time, testing errors come down to equipment condition, user technique, or environmental factors.
