Testing pool water goes a long way

By Marcelle Dibrell

In the pool and spa service industry, accurate water testing does more than ensure clean, safe water — it’s one of the most powerful tools for building customer loyalty.

While many clients may not fully understand water chemistry, they recognize professionalism, consistency, and results. Reliable testing can become the foundation for building long-term service relationships.

That’s because when a technician performs a water test on-site and clearly explains the results, it can help the customer feel informed and included in the process. Whether you’re showing them a digital readout, a color chart, or writing down values on a service sheet, visible proof of testing builds trust.

Do you have customers that like to hang out and observe you while you work poolside? Try sharing your test readings and tell customers what adjustments you're making and why.

And consider using testing apps that generate a professional report. Clients love seeing detailed service records.

Consistent testing shows that you’re not just guessing about water care. It sends a message: I care about this pool, and I want it to be safe and perfect for your family. Clients may not always notice when chlorine is a little off — but they will remember a green pool if they are paying for weekly service. You can show them early signs of an algae bloom and the special measures you are taking to address it.

Catching issues early through testing reinforces your value. Share the story: “Your pH was creeping up, which can lead to scale, but I caught it before it became a problem.”

When a customer complains about itchy skin, cloudy water, or algae, having testing records gives you credibility. Rather than guessing or over-explaining, you can point to your log and say, “Here’s what the water looked like the last three visits. This issue started after heavy rain — we needed to bump up your chlorine and recheck stabilizer.”

Keep a log, even if it’s handwritten. It’s a valuable tool for both diagnostics and demonstrating your professionalism.

Not all pool services test thoroughly. Some skip testing altogether or rely solely on test strips. Offering fullspectrum testing — such as for chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium, CYA, salt, phosphates — shows you’re a cut above.

And don’t just test — talk about your testing process. Let customers know you go beyond the basics to protect their pool investment.

Water testing can also lead to smart upsells that benefit both the customer and your business. Low calcium? Recommend a treatment. High phosphates? Suggest a remover. Because you’ve built trust with accurate testing, these suggestions feel like expert advice — not sales pressure.

Water testing isn’t just a maintenance task — it’s a relationship tool. When done properly and communicated clearly, it shows your clients that you are detail-oriented, knowledgeable, and worth keeping.

In a service business, that kind of trust is what keeps customers coming back season after season.

In this special issue of Service Industry News, we’re digging into the finer points of pool and spa water chemistry testing. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be consistent, accurate, and wellcommunicated.

From comparing testing methods to troubleshooting errors and managing test kit inventory, this issue explores how top professionals are using water testing to grow their businesses — and keep their clients happy.
