Crystal clear water requires top filtration

When it comes to maintaining sparkling clean pool and spa water, filters are the silent workhorses of the system, doing one of the most important jobs behind the scenes: removing dirt, debris, oils, and microscopic particles that cloud water and compromise sanitation.

For service technicians, understanding filters is not just a matter of equipment knowledge — it’s a cornerstone of water quality management.

At its core, filtration is a mechanical process. Water is pushed through a medium that traps particles, allowing only clean water to return to the pool or spa.

But not all filters are created equal, and choosing the right one — or maintaining the one in place — can make a major difference in the effectiveness of the system, the clarity of the water, and the frequency of service calls. In today’s service environment, where efficiency and cost-effectiveness are key, technicians need to understand the different types of filters, how they operate, their pros and cons, and how to keep them running smoothly.

There are three main types of pool and spa filters used in residential and commercial settings: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (D.E.). Each has its champions and critics, and each is suited to specific situations based on bather load, pool size, maintenance frequency, and customer preference.

Sand filters, for example, are the most common and often the easiest to operate, but they don’t filter as finely as other types.

Cartridge filters offer finer filtration and are great for water conservation because they don’t require backwashing, but they do need periodic cleaning or replacement. D.E. filters are prized for their ultrafine filtration capabilities, catching particles as small as 2–5 microns, but they come with more complex maintenance requirements and chemical handling considerations.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in alternative filter media. Glass filter media, cellulosebased products, and zeolite are among the options that promise better performance, longer life, and in some cases, environmental benefits. Technicians are also experimenting with filter aids, enzymes, and clarifiers to improve water clarity without over-relying on chemical adjustments.

These specialty products can enhance filter performance, reduce maintenance time, and even extend the life of the filter itself.

Filter maintenance is another crucial topic. Whether it’s backwashing a sand filter, cleaning a cartridge, or recharging D.E., service techs must know how and when to perform these tasks to prevent pressure build-up, circulation problems, or — worst case — equipment failure. Poorly maintained filters are a common culprit behind cloudy water, algae blooms, and unsatisfied customers.

And in today’s market, filters are increasingly being judged not only on performance but also on efficiency.

Water-saving and energy-efficient features are becoming more important, especially in droughtprone regions or commercial settings with high operating costs.

The rise of variable-speed pumps and smart controls also influences filter performance and selection.
