Get smart about pool hydraulics

For pool service professionals, knowing how to brush, balance, and backwash will keep a pool looking good. But understanding hydraulics — the science of water movement — can take a technician from being just another service provider to being a trusted expert clients are willing to pay more for.

Hydraulics governs how water flows through a pool system: from the skimmer and main drain, through the pump, filter, and heater, and back into the pool. A grasp of concepts like flow rate, total dynamic head (TDH), pump curves, and system efficiency isn’t just for engineers — it’s what separates a guess-and-check approach from confident, optimized solutions.

Why does that matter?

Because the average pool owner often has no idea why their pool isn’t circulating properly or why their energy bill has jumped. If you can explain — clearly and without jargon — how a clogged impeller affects flow, why undersized plumbing restricts performance, or how a variable-speed pump can save hundreds of dollars annually, you instantly position yourself as an authority.

For service pros, knowledge of hydraulics isn’t only about solving problems: It’s about creating business opportunities.

Selling Upgrades with Confidence: When you can calculate flow requirements for a pool and show that the existing pump is oversized or running inefficiently, you can recommend a right-sized, energyefficient replacement backed by numbers, not guesswork. Clients are far more likely to invest when they see a clear cause-and-effect.

Preventing Future Problems: You can point out that replacing a filter now — before pressure rises and flow drops — can extend the life of the pump and improve water quality. Proactive solutions build trust and loyalty, and customers appreciate when you’re looking ahead.

Explaining Return on Investment (ROI): A well-informed tech can translate hydraulic adjustments into dollars saved.

For example: “By lowering your pump speed from 3,000 RPM to 1,800 RPM and increasing run time, you’ll maintain the same turnover rate but save $400 a year in electricity.”

That kind of math sells. Differentiating Your Business: Many pool companies focus on chemical balancing and cleaning. Fewer can confidently analyze flow rates and pressure readings.

Marketing yourself as a circulation expert sets you apart in a competitive field.

Building the Skill Set: Hydraulic knowledge is learnable. Manufacturers offer training, trade shows host technical seminars, and industry publications cover the latest tools and techniques. Even basic pressure/vacuum gauge readings can reveal a lot about a system’s health.

Over time, you’ll recognize patterns — how certain filter types impact TDH, or how a heater installation changes flow — and you can apply that knowledge in the field.

How to Sell Your Hydraulic Expertise Show the Numbers —

Use flow rate, turnover, and energy cost calculations to make your recommendations concrete.

Speak Their Language —

Skip the jargon. Explain “total dynamic head” as “how hard your pump has to work to push water.”

Spot Issues Early — Point out circulation problems before they cause cloudy water or equipment damage.

Offer Energy Savings –

Demonstrate how adjusting pump speeds can keep the pool clean while cutting utility bills.

Market Your Niche –

Promote yourself as a circulation and hydraulics expert — a specialty that sets you apart from other pool pros.

In this special issue of Service Industry News, we’re tackling hydraulics for pool pros.

Mastering hydraulics isn’t just about moving water efficiently.

It’s about moving your business forward — learning the credibility to charge for your expertise, the trust to retain customers, and the confidence to recommend improvements that genuinely benefit the swimming pool owner.

When you understand how water moves, you can make your career move too.
