A crane employed to transport a new spa into the backyard of a New Jersey home toppled through the home’s roof.

The incident occurred in Hamilton Township in Mercer County at about 12:30 p.m. on October 7. The crane was lifting a prefabricated spa into the backyard when something went wrong, tipping the truck cab of the crane into the air while its arm went through the roof.

No one was behind the wheel of the truck when the arm of the crane collapsed on the roof, according to Acting Fire Chief Steven Kraemer.

“They recognized the shift in the weight of the crane itself and the person quickly removed themself from the hazard,” Kraemer said.

When the backyard workers realized the crane was falling, they also got out of the way in a hurry.

“You had some workers in the rear saying, “‘Left, right, up, down,’” said Hamilton Township Mayor Jeff Martin. “They scattered once they started to realize it came down on the house,” he said.

It took two additional cranes to remove the collapsed crane from the residence, and crews worked swiftly to place a tarp on the damaged portion of the roof, ahead of forecast rain.

Inspectors will return to determine the full extent of the damage to the house, which had recently been remodeled.
