Water resistent liquid rubber pool finish

There’s a growing interest among pool professionals and savvy DIYers alike in liquid rubber or polymer membrane systems that do more than just “paint” a surface. Unlike traditional pool paints, these products cure into seamless, elastomeric waterproof membranes that can serve as the actual waterproofing finish of a pool — while also offering flexibility, durability, and an attractive surface when properly specified and installed.

At a basic level, liquid rubber/ polymer membrane products are fluid coatings that cure into continuous rubber-like films, typically made from polyurethane, synthetic rubber, or elastomeric polymers. They bond to the substrate and form a flexible, impermeable layer that resists water intrusion and accommodates some movement or cracking in the pool shell. Importantly, these are not “paint” in the decorative or surfaceonly sense.

Unlike paint — which forms a relatively thin, brittle or semibrittle layer that can crack, chip, or delaminate — liquid membranes are engineered to be thick, flexible, and bonded across the entire depth of the coating, acting as waterproofing membranes in their own right.

What This Technology Is (and Isn’t)

Liquid rubber membranes are polymer systems that cure into elastomeric (rubber-like) films. When applied appropriately — often in multiple coats and at specified thicknesses — they form a uniform barrier that prevents water passage through the substrate, whether concrete, gunite, plaster, fiberglass, or masonry.

Their performance hinges on chemical composition and application quality: They stretch, bend, and recover without cracking, and they are generally low VOC and relatively safe once cured. These membranes differ fundamentally from conventional pool paints (acrylics, epoxies, etc.) because their primary purpose is waterproofing, not just surface color or decorative enhancement.

Key Products in the U.S. Market

Several well-known liquid-applied waterproofing and elastomeric membrane products are available in, or marketed to, the U.S. market within this niche. We were able to identify the following suppliers: SANI- TRED ( PermaFlex, LRB, TAV) — Coordinated liquid polyurethane systems designed to create fully bonded, elastic waterproof membranes.

While these products fall within the broader category of liquid rubber and polymer-based membranes available in the U.S., their intended uses, certifications, and performance characteristics vary widely.

Many are not specifically engineered or certified for continuous submersion or direct exposure to pool water chemistry.

For professionals considering their use in swimming pool environments, it is critical to verify submersion ratings, chemical resistance, applicable standards, and manufacturer guidance. Doing so helps ensure code compliance, preserve warranty coverage, and support long-term performance.

Application

Installation of liquid rubber membranes generally starts with meticulous surface preparation: Removing old coat ings and contaminants; profiling the substrate; and ensuring it is clean, dry, and structurally sound so the membrane can bond. Many systems recommend a primer coat (PermaFlex, for example, doubles as a primer and topcoat), followed by one or more full membrane coats, and then filling and detailing with pourable or thickened liquid rubber at joints and cracks. Cure times vary by product and environmental conditions; full waterproofing performance typically doesn’t occur until the material has fully cured across its thickness.

Unlike paint — which might be slapped on in a few hours and submerged shortly thereafter, these membranes often require multiple coats, careful environmental control, and sometimes longer curing intervals, especially if submerged soon after application. This is not a casual weekend backyard project unless the applicator has significant coating experience. SANI-TRED, for instance, supplies detailed written instructions, step-by-step guides, and technical support, and markets the system as DIY-friendly if installed carefully.

Many professional applicators also work with these systems, particularly on larger or critical waterproofing jobs.

Where They Can Be Applied

Liquid rubber membranes can be applied over many substrates, including concrete, gunite, plaster, fiberglass, masonry, and even some metals when prepped correctly. They are used both in remodel situations (e.g., sealing old, leaking pool shells) and in select new construction scenarios where a waterproof membrane finish is required or preferred. Because these products cure into continuous, flexible films, they help bridge minor cracks and movement that rigid finishes can’t tolerate.

Longevity and Performance

The longevity of liquid rubber membranes depends heavily on substrate preparation, application quality, and environmental exposure.

When installed correctly, these systems can outperform typical pool paints and coatings by remaining flexible and bonded for many years without cracking or delaminating. Some manufacturers claim lifetime waterproofing when applied as a complete system, but independent, long-term submerged performance data for pools is limited compared to traditional plaster, tile, or reinforced PVC liners. It’s wise to view these membranes as specialty waterproof finishes with potentially excellent lifespans if properly detailed and installed.

Pros and Cons Compared to Other Finishes Against conventional pool paints, liquid rubber membranes offer true waterproofing, flexibility, and durability rather than just surface color and modest protection. Compared with plaster or tile, they are less rigid, can accommodate slight movement, and are easier and faster to apply with fewer specialized trades involved.

However, they don’t deliver the classic premium look of plaster or decorative tile surfaces.

They also require careful wet- applied techniques and cannot simply be brushed on like paint; application quality is critical.

Compared to reinforced PVC or traditional liners, liquid membranes provide seamless waterproofing directly on structural substrates without separate liners but may not offer the same level of uniform finish or design variety.

Their performance is contingent on correct application and curing, especial ly under submerged conditions.

Real-World Considerations and Reviews Trade and user feedback suggests mixed but interesting experiences with liquid membranes in pool applications.

Systems intended for general waterproofing can work well so long as instructions are followed and substrates are prepared.

However, caution is advised: Not all “liquid rubber” products are equal, and some broad-use coatings marketed as pool water-proofers can deliver subpar results if used outside their design limits or without appropriate detailing.

Choosing products explicitly designed for waterproofing — supported by detailed guidance and warranties — is key to achieving lasting results.
