Industry guidance and startup procedures generally recommend waiting to add free chlorine until the basic balancing (pH and alkalinity) is settled and the filtration has been running continuously for a day or more. Rapid oxidation without balance can destabilize metals and hardness minerals, leading to unfriendly reaction products.
