Join UPA for good old fashioned support

The United Pool Association (UPA) represents a distinct segment of the pool and spa industry, built specifically around the needs of independent service professionals. With an emphasis on insurance, autonomy, and a peer-driven structure, it offers a practical, business-focused model well suited to small companies and sole operators.

UPA traces its roots to early service groups such as the “Sand Dabbers,” formed in 1958 in Orange County, California, where members covered each other’s routes during absences.

Established in the late 1980s and now more than 1,800 members strong, the association remains headquartered in Newport Beach, California, with a grassroots, member-driven approach. UPA supports independent professionals while preserving autonomy. Its philosophy holds that each member is best equipped to run their own business, and its largely volunteer-led structure ensures decisions reflect real-world service experience rather than top-down management.

The cornerstone of membership is its commercial liability insurance program, underwritten by American Southern Insurance Company and administered through Western Growers Insurance Services, designed specifically for pool service operations. Coverage addresses risks such as chemical incidents, equipment damage, and water-related claims.

Members typically pay monthly premiums in the $60–$75 range, and notably, UPA does not charge separate membership dues — participation is tied directly to the insurance program.

A key financial advantage is UPA’s dividend program, offered through its insurance provider. Based on overall claims performance, members may receive dividends of up to 20 percent of premiums, reducing longterm coverage costs and adding measurable value.

Beyond insurance, UPA provides business tools including marketing resources, sample contracts, and operational guidance. Local and virtual chapters offer regular opportunities to exchange knowledge, troubleshoot challenges, and stay current, while peer interaction supports practical learning in water chemistry, equipment, and business management.

UPAalso serves as a collective voice for independent service professionals, advocating for reasonable standards while maintaining its focus on independence.

For service professionals, UPA delivers a streamlined model combining liability protection, financial return, and peer support to strengthen daily operations and longterm stability.
