NPC committed to improving pool finish

The National Plasterers Council (NPC) plays a specialized — yet highly influential — role in the pool and spa industry, focusing on one of its most critical and often misunderstood components: interior finishes. For service professionals, membership provides access to technical expertise, standardized practices, and educational resources that directly improve service quality and troubleshooting.

Founded in 1989 and headquartered in Southern California, NPC was established to promote proper installation, care, and understanding of cementitious finishes, including plaster, quartz, and exposed aggregate. Its membership spans plasterers, manufacturers, builders, service professionals, and consultants, creating a collaborative bridge between installation and long-term maintenance.

NPC develops and promotes standards that improve finish performance and longevity. Its technical manuals and startup procedures — widely referenced across the industry — outline proper curing, water balance, and maintenance practices. For service technicians, these resources are critical in preventing issues such as scaling, etching, mottling, and discoloration, many of which trace back to water chemistry and startup errors.

NPC is also regarded as a leading authority on plaster-related issues, often serving as a technical reference in diagnosing surface problems and resolving finish-related disputes. This gives members access to trusted, science-based guidance applicable in real-world service situations.

Education remains central. Programs such as the Start-Up Technician Certification focus on startup procedures, water chemistry, and troubleshooting newly plastered pools. Members also receive technical bulletins, best-practice guidelines, and direct access to the Director of Technical Services — a valuable resource for complex or unusual conditions.

Collaboration is reinforced through events like the annual NPC Conference, featuring education, hands-on demonstrations, and discussion with industry experts.

Membership also offers business advantages, including use of the NPC name and logo, access to group insurance programs, and participation in technical committees and research initiatives.

Annual dues typically range from $400 to $1,000.

For service professionals, NPC membership delivers deeper technical understanding, expert support, and stronger connection to the science behind pool finishes — leading to better outcomes and greater customer confidence.
