The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) has announced a forthcoming update to one of the industry’s core operational standards, opening the door for service professionals, regulators, and other stakeholders to help shape the revision.
The association is initiating a limited review of the ANSI/PHTA/ ICC-2 2023, known as PHTA-2, American National Standard for Public Pool and Spa Operations and Maintenance, which governs the operation and maintenance of public pools, spas, and aquatic venues.
According to PHTA, the revision will focus specifically on water quality requirements, referenced standards, and closely related provisions.
As part of the process, PHTA is now accepting applications for its new Standard Writing Committee (SWC), which will be responsible for evaluating and drafting any proposed updates.
The committee will operate under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) periodic maintenance framework, with an anticipated project timeline of about four months.
PHTA is seeking subject matter experts and experienced users of the current standard who can actively contribute to the drafting process. However, participation is not limited to technical specialists.

of assembling a balanced and representative committee.
In addi t ion to commi t tee participation, stakeholders may submit formal change requests for the existing PHTA-2 standard.
These submissions will be reviewed by the SWC as part of the revision process.
Applications to join the committee are due by April 13, 2026.
Those who may not wish to serve directly are still invited to follow the process as observers during committee meetings.
For service technicians, particularly those working with commercial accounts, PHTA-2, American National Standard for Public Pool and Spa Operations and Maintenance, remains one of the most relevant documents governing day-to-day operations — from water quality management to compliance with health codes.
Updates to the standard can have direct implications in the field, making this revision cycle an opportunity for industry professionals to weigh in on practical, real-world considerations.
