Health officials in Colorado confirmed in March 2026 that multiple cases of Legionnaires’ Disease have been linked to guests who stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch — with exposures traced back to visits between July and December 2025.

The discovery prompted an investigation into the resort’s water system and the temporary shutdown of its hot tubs, after Legionella bacteria was detected on site. At least two cases have been confirmed, though officials have not released a total count. The investigation was led by state and local agencies, including the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which worked to identify affected guests and assess any ongoing risk.

While no single exposure point has been officially confirmed, hot tubs quickly became the focus. In large facilities, they are a known risk due to their warm temperatures and the fine mist created by jets — conditions that can both support bacterial growth and carry it into the air where it can be inhaled.

The resort shut down its spa facilities during the investigation.

No deaths have been reported. Following remediation efforts — including disinfection of the water system and follow-up testing — health officials reported that Legionella was no longer detectable. By late March, the resort’s water features, including hot tubs, were cleared to reopen.

The case is a reminder that even well-maintained properties can face challenges with complex water systems. When conditions allow bacteria to persist — particularly in high-risk features like hot tubs — the issue isn’t just contamination, but the potential for airborne exposure.
