Will UV destroy chlorine?

Yes — but less than most people think. Inline UV systems can break down both free chlorine and chloramines, but contact time is brief. In practice, UV reduces combined chlorine more than free chlorine. Sunlight remains the primary source of chlorine loss in outdoor pools.

Can ozone destroy chlorine?

Yes. Ozone reacts with free chlorine and oxidizes chloramines. While it can reduce chlorine locally, the overall effect is typically lower chlorine demand and improved water quality.

If UV and ozone are so powerful, why is chlorine still needed?

Because neither provides a residual. They only treat water as it passes through the system. A residual sanitizer is required to protect the water between circulation cycles.

What is a “residual,” and why does it matter?

A residual is a measurable level of sanitizer present in the pool at all times. It provides continuous protection against contamination between filtration cycles.

Are mineral systems enough on their own?

No. Copper and silver ions act slowly and do not oxidize contaminants. They are best used alongside a low level of chlorine.

Do any of these systems work without chlorine?

Very few. Biguanide systems are one example, but most alternatives are designed to reduce chlorine — not replace it.

Why does my pool still smell?

Odor is usually caused by chloramines, not free chlorine. Persistent smell can indicate insufficient oxidation, high bather load, or poor circulation.

Do these systems reduce chemical use?

Yes — but they do not eliminate it. Most reduce chlorine demand and improve water quality, but a residual sanitizer and proper balance are still required.

Are these systems safer or “healthier”?

They can improve comfort and reduce byproducts. However, without proper residual sanitation, overall safety can decrease.

Why does algae still appear in alternative systems? Because algae control depends on consistent sanitizer levels. Supplemental systems cannot prevent growth if the residual drops too low.

Do these systems affect water balance?

Not directly. UV has essentially no impact; ozone has minimal effect. Standard pH, alkalinity, and saturation control still apply.

Are these systems maintenancefree?

No. UV lamps degrade; ozone systems require clean injectors and dry air; and mineral systems require monitoring to prevent staining.

What’s the biggest misconception about alternative sanitizers?

That they replace chlorine. In most cases, they improve water quality and reduce demand — but a residual sanitizer is still required.
