Pair ozone with chlorine and oxidize

Ozone is one of the most powerful oxidizers used in pool and spa water treatment. It is not a replacement for chlorine. It is a supplemental technology that performs exceptionally well within a defined role.

Ozone (O3) is an unstable triatomic form of oxygen. It readily decomposes back to diatomic oxygen (O2), releasing a highly reactive oxygen atom. In water, ozone reacts directly with contaminants or decomposes further to form hydroxyl radicals (

•OH), among the strongest oxidizers in water treatment. These reactions attack organic molecules, break down nitrogen compounds, and disrupt microbial cell structures.

Ozone is extremely fast. Its oxidation potential (2.07 V) exceeds that of chlorine (1.36 V), and under ideal conditions it can inactivate microorganisms in seconds. However, this speed is offset by instability. Ozone has a very short half-life in water — typically minutes, often less depending on temperature and contaminant load. It does not persist.

Ozone provides no residual sanitizer in the pool or spa. It is generated on-site and injected into the circulation system, usually through a venturi injector. Some systems include a contact chamber to increase exposure time, but by the time water returns to the vessel, most of the ozone has decomposed. Its effect is largely confined to the plumbing and immediate return flow.

Because of this, ozone must be paired with a primary sanitizer — typically chlorine — to maintain a residual in the bulk water. Without that residual, contaminants introduced between circulation cycles can survive and spread. This is not a minor drawback; it is the defining constraint of ozone as a stand-alone system.

It is important to separate oxidation from sanitation. Ozone is an exceptional oxidizer. It destroys chloramines, breaks down oils and organic debris, and improves water clarity. In doing so, it can reduce chlorine demand and improve overall water quality.

The method of ozone generation matters. Most modern systems use corona discharge (CD), where dry air or oxygen passes through a highvoltage field to produce ozone. UVbased ozone generators exist, but they produce lower concentrations and are less common in pool applications. Proper installation includes injection, mixing, and off-gas management — excess ozone must be safely vented or destroyed, as ozone gas is hazardous at elevated levels.

In terms of water chemistry, ozone reduces combined chlorine by oxidizing chloramines and other nitrogen compounds. This can improve air quality (reduce odor), particularly in indoor pools. It also enhances oxidation of bather waste, contributing to clearer water. However, it does not replace the need for proper water balance. Alkalinity, pH, and saturation index remain unchanged, and ozone does not prevent scaling or corrosion.

The most common issue with ozone is overreliance — people assume it alone can maintain sanitation. This leads to low residual sanitizer levels and resulting water quality problems, including cloudiness and microbial growth. Equipment issues are also common: fouled injectors, failing check valves, moisture damage in corona discharge cells, and gradual loss of output. Because ozone systems operate out of sight, performance degradation often goes unnoticed without active monitoring.

Ozone is best understood as a high-performance oxidation tool that enhances — but does not replace — traditional sanitation. It is particularly effective in indoor pools, high bather load environments, and systems where chloramine control is a priority.

Ozone improves water quality. It does not carry protection into the pool itself.
