Pool Corp. takes on new leadership

Pool Corporation announced May 4 that president and CEO PeterArvan has stepped down, with John B. Watwood appointed as the company’s new president and chief executive officer effective immediately. The company also announced that chairman John E. Stokely will assume the additional role of Executive Chair.

Arvan also resigned from the Pool Corp board of directors as part of the transition. The company stated that the leadership change followed ongoing succession planning efforts and said Watwood brings the operational, strategic, and sales leadership experience needed to guide the company through its “next phase of growth.”

The leadership change at Pool Corp — the pool industry’s largest wholesale distributor — drew immediate interest from both Wall Street analysts and pool industry professionals.

The transition came after a generally successful tenure under Arvan. Arvan became CEO in 2019 after joining Pool Corp in 2017. During his leadership, the company experienced one of the strongest growth periods in modern pool-industry history as the pandemic-era backyard boom drove surging demand for residential pools, outdoor-living products, and aftermarket equipment.

Even after pandemic-era growth slowed, the company continued emphasizing the relative strength of maintenance, repair, and replacement demand. In announcing Arvan’s resignation, Stokely credited Arvan for helping drive “innovation and operational excellence” throughout the organization while strengthening the company’s long-term market position.

Arvan reflected positively on the company’s culture and relationships within the industry.

“With all of our success, the greatest accomplishment has been the team we have amassed, from our leadership to our distribution network and every person in between,” Arvan stated. “I have every confidence that Pool Corp will continue to grow and strengthen as I continue to cheer this team on from the sidelines.”

Arvan will be succeeded by Watwood, whose background is rooted heavily in industrial and specialty distribution management.

Watwood joined Pool Corp earlier this year as executive vice president. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president of sales and operations at Motion Industries, a subsidiary of Genuine Parts Company. His background also includes positions with SMC Corporation of America and Applied Industrial Technologies, a c cording to the company announcement.

In its press release, Pool Corp also announced that it is postponing its previously scheduled May 12 Investor Day event in Phoenix, Arizona, saying a new date will be announced later. The company reaffirmed its existing full-year 2026 financial guidance.

At press time, shares of Pool Corp were down nine percent following the news, with several analysts citing uncertainty surrounding the leadership change and the postponement of Investor Day. At the same time, many analysts noted that the company’s decision to reaffirm full-year 2026 guidance helped reduce fears of deeper operational or financial problems.

Reaction among pool professionals on social media quickly shifted away from the leadership announcement itself and toward criticism of Pool Corp over pricing, online competition, and the increasing cost of doing business.

In Facebook industry groups, contractors moved the discussion toward equipment pricing, distributor relationships, warranty issues, and customer resistance to rising costs. One contractor responded to the announcement by writing, “Hey John – Lower our prices.”

Other contractors complained about increasing online competition — primarily from Amazon — and lower-priced alternatives, with some commenters claiming the same pool equipment could occasionally be purchased online for less than through traditional distribution channels.

While analysts focused largely on the timing of the leadership change and the delayed Investor Day, many contractors used the announcement to voice frustration over rising prices, competition, and the growing availability of lower-cost alternatives.
