Three residents and a dog were forced to jump into a swimming pool when their apartment caught fire.
Firefighters were called to a Santa Monica, California, apartment complex on April 1 and were met with a well-developed fire within a single unit on the first floor of a threestory apartment building.
According to the Santa Monica Fire Department, the size and complexity of the apartment complex increased the potential of the fire to spread and trap occupants inside. While searching connected units for trapped residents, firefighters aggressively battled the fire, managing to extinguish it within 20 minutes.
“Three residents and one dog were forced to jump into the swimming pool to escape the fire prior to the fire department's arrival,” said Fire Department Captain Patrick Nulty.
SMFD called additional resources from the LosAngeles Fire Department and Santa Monica police, whose officers shut down traffic on nearby streets.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the unit where it originated.
No residents, firefighters, or dogs were injured, and SMFD investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
