Immersion spa heater causes home fire

An immersion heater for a hot tub is believed to have started a residential fire.

The incident occurred on December 17 in Larkin Township, in central Michigan.

Firefighters from Larkin Township and the City of Midland responded to the fire under an automatic mutual aid agreement, said Midland Fire Marshal John Jurek.

A room in the rear of the home near the hot tub had caught fire and firefighters reported seeing smoke. But by the time emergency responders arrived, the homeowner was outside the residence and told firefighters that the fire was now out. Firefighters confirmed the fire was extinguished by the homeowner.

Firefighters continued to monitor the scene and provide ventilation to clear the smoke from the house.

No injuries were reported.
