Legionella bacteria found in resort spa

A New Hampshire resort hot tub that was implicated in a recent Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak has tested positive for legionella bacteria.

According to health officials, the resort’s hot tub “may have been” the source of the legionella exposure in two people — a Massachusetts woman who died from Legionnaires’ Disease and a Rhode Island resident who was hospitalized with it.

Officials with the Mountain View Grand Resort in Whitefield said the trace levels of bacteria were detected by the New Hampshire Division of Public Health Services.

'It is unclear at this time, and may never be known, if the trace amounts of Legionella were of the same bacterium that led to the illness of two former guests,' the resort wrote in a statement.

According to the statement, the hot tub was removed.

'The indoor hot tub, when operational, was a self-contained system, and the trace amount of legionella was isolated from the rest of the property. Out of an abundance of caution, the property immediately drained, closed, and eliminated the hot tub, and there are no plans to re-open it,' the statement read.

In October, 71-year-old Barbara Kruschwitz, of Merrimac, became sick and died just days after she and her husband left the resort. Henry Kruschwitz said she swam in the resort’s pool and used the hot tub, while he did not.

Officials confirmed that there have been no additional cases of Legionnaires’ Disease tied to the resort.
