Ohio hotel swimming pool shut down for rash

An Ohio hotel swimming pool was shut down after several parents said their children got a severe rash after swimming there. The Hampton Inn and Suites in Toledo was shut down by the County Health Department this February after parents called to complain about it.

Parents shared pictures of the rash on their children’s faces and said their children developed the rashes after swimming in the hotel pool. One mother said she took her daughter to a doctor.

“I saw the red rash all behind her ears and then it was on the side of her face the next day,” said Vanessa Elmore. “They prescribed her like a steroid, like antibiotics, for the rash, but didn’t exactly say what the rash was.”

Health inspectors visited the facility on February 15 following parents’ complaints. Inspection records showed that disinfectant residuals were less than 1 ppm, and the pool was shut down.

“We conducted our inspection, and the pool is now closed by order of the health department until we can do a reinspection and have the equipment checked, and also making sure all of the chemicals are up to the proper levels,” said Jennifer Gottschalk, Director of Environmental Health.
