Crypto closes public pools, splash pads

All public pools and splash pads in Albuquerque, New Mexico were closed for two days at the end of July and beginning of August due to two confirmed cases of cryptosporidium.

While two cases of the diarrheacausing parasite were detected in the swimmers at a City of Albuquerque pool, the parasite was not found in the pool itself.

'This was not in our pools but it was a patron that came to our facilities that visited our facility and then were diagnosed with crypto,' said Kent Vigil, with the Albuquerque's Parks and Recreation Department, after the first case was discovered.

Nonetheless, Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department and Bernalillo County closed more than a dozen pools in “an abundance of caution” as water operators deep cleaned and hyperchlorinated the aquatic venues.
