Cool new winterizing tools & gadgets

In recent years, several new gadgets and tools have emerged that make the winterization process for pools easier, more efficient, and safer.

One of the more innovative devices is the Smart Winterizing Plug, which takes traditional expansion plugs to the next level. These plugs come equipped with built-in pressure sensors that monitor the internal conditions of the pool's plumbing. If the pressure inside the lines rises, indicating potential freezing, the device alerts the pool owner or service tech via a mobile app.

This proactive approach allows for quick action, preventing freeze damage before it occurs.

Another handy tool is the automated cover pump. While manual pumps have long been used to remove accumulated rainwater and snowmelt from pool covers, automated versions can now do the job without constant supervision. These pumps activate automatically when they detect water buildup, ensuring that the pool cover remains free of excess weight throughout the winter. Some models even come with smart sensors that adjust to weather conditions and monitor for ice, optimizing their performance and extending their lifespan.

Glycerin-filled pressure gauges are another advancement techs are embracing for winterization. These gauges are more resistant to freezing and temperature fluctuations than traditional gauges, making them ideal for winter conditions. By using these gauges, service techs can accurately monitor the pressure in pool systems during the winterization process, ensuring that all components are properly protected without risking freeze damage or pressure imbalances in the system.

An interesting tool that has gained traction is the liquid pool cover. While typically used in the summer to reduce evaporation, some techs are applying it before closing pools for the winter. The liquid cover forms an invisible layer on the pool's surface that helps retain heat and prevents debris from sticking to the water. This can be especially useful in climates where winter temperatures fluctuate, as it can slightly reduce the chance of freezing when combined with other winterizing techniques.

For techs handling larger commercial pools, the automatic blow-out system is a game-changer. These systems use a high-powered, portable air compressor designed specifically for pool winterization. Unlike traditional compressors, they offer a more controlled and powerful air stream, clearing out lines with precision and speed. The automatic systems even allow techs to blow out multiple lines simultaneously, saving time while ensuring that the plumbing is thoroughly cleared.

Pool skimmer guards have been upgraded with more durable, flexible materials that can better withstand extreme cold. These guards, made from high-grade, impact-resistant polymers, sit inside the skimmer basket and prevent freeze damage by absorbing expansion caused by freezing water. Some models are now designed with added UV protection, ensuring they last through multiple seasons without becoming brittle or cracked.

These new tools have helped pool professionals streamline winterization, protect pool equipment more effectively, and offer greater peace of mind to their clients, reducing the risk of damage caused by winter weather.
