Good service techs know pool parameters

For swimming pool and spa service technicians, water testing is the foundation of proper maintenance. Without accurate testing, the rest of the job — balancing water, sanitizing, and preventing damage — becomes a guessing game. Understanding the core parameters and their ideal ranges helps ensure water that’s safe, clear, and comfortable for swimmers.

At minimum, techs should test for the following: free chlorine, total chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid.

Depending on the pool system and water source, other tests — like salt levels, phosphates, or metals — may also be appropriate.

Let’s break down the basics:

• Free Chlorine (FC): This is the chlorine actively sanitizing the water. Ideal range: 1.0–4.0 ppm for pools, slightly higher for spas. Low FC allows algae and bacteria to thrive; too high can cause irritation.

• Total Chlorine (TC): Includes both free chlorine and combined chlorine. If TC is significantly higher than FC (more than 0.2 ppm above FC), it may indicate a buildup of chloramines — irritants formed when chlorine reacts with contaminants like sweat or urine.

• pH: Measures how acidic or basic the water is. Range: 7.2–7.8. Low pH can corrode equipment and sting eyes, while high pH reduces chlorine effectiveness and leads to scaling.

• Total Alkalinity (TA): Helps buffer pH, preventing wide swings. Range: 60–180 ppm. If TA is too low, pH becomes unstable. If too high, it can lead to cloudy water and scale.

• Calcium Hardness (CH): Refers to the amount of dissolved calcium in the water. Range: 150–1,000 ppm. Too little can corrode plaster or etch tile grout; too much can cause scale and cloudy water.

• Cyanuric Acid (CYA): This stabilizer protects chlorine from sunlight degradation in outdoor pools. Range: 30–90 ppm; Ideal: 30–50 ppm. Higher levels lower the reaction rate of chlorine, making it less effective; lower levels allow it to dissipate too quickly.

Testing frequency depends on pool type, bather load, and weather. In general, chlorine and pH should be tested at least once a week for residential pools and daily (or more often) for commercial ones. Total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and CYA can be tested weekly or monthly (check local/state guidance) unless problems arise. Accurate testing starts with fresh reagents, clean testing equipment, and good technique. Storing test kits away from heat and sunlight, rinsing vials with pool water before use, and using correct sample sizes all contribute to reliable results.

Service pros who master these testing basics not only ensure better water quality but also build trust with their clients. After all, water chemistry isn’t just a science — it’s a service.
