Regenerative DE systems and sustainability

In the push toward greener aquatic facilities, regenerative DE filtration systems have emerged as a sustainability standout. Long used in drinking water treatment, these advanced filters are now the go-to choice for a growing number of municipal pools, aquatic centers, water parks, and buildings looking to minimize water waste and maximize water quality.

At the forefront is Neptune-Benson’s Defender system, widely regarded as the benchmark for regenerative DE filtration. Since 2008, the Defender filter has been used in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, and it was used at Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2024 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Indiana. But as operating costs rise and environmental scrutiny intensifies, many everyday pool managers are turning to these systems as a way to cut back on water, chemicals, and downtime — all while meeting increasingly stringent health codes.

What is regenerative DE?

Traditional DE filters use diatomaceous earth — fossilized remains of diatoms — as the filtration medium.

While effective, they require frequent backwashing, which wastes both water and energy, and they generate hazardous waste when spent DE must be disposed of.

Regenerative DE (RDE) systems filter water down to 1 micron — far finer than sand or cartridge systems — and reuse the same DE media for weeks at a time. Instead of backwashing, they use a mechanical regeneration cycle that “pulses” or “agitates” the DE-coated tubes or screens, dislodging debris and restoring flow without flushing out water.

Neptune-Benson reports that the Defender system uses 90 percent less water than traditional DE filters over the same filtration cycle. That’s a massive savings when you consider that some commercial pools backwash tens of thousands of gallons per month.

Environmental and operational benefits

• Water savings: With no backwash cycle, facilities can save thousands of gallons weekly — crucial in droughtprone regions.

• Chemical savings: Reduced water turnover lowers chemical consumption and helps maintain more stable water chemistry.

• Energy savings: Less water movement and heating means lower utility bills.

• Compliance and certification: Systems like Defender support LEED credits, NSF 50 compliance, and state-level energy mandates.

Operators also benefit from longer filter runs, cleaner water, and reduced maintenance, because media can last up to a month or longer before needing replacement.

Barriers to entry The benefits come at a price. RDE systems are significantly more expensive than traditional sand or cartridge systems, often costing tens of thousands of dollars to install. Maintenance, while less frequent, requires specific training, and replacement parts are proprietary and costly.

However, many operators see this as a long-term investment — with ROI coming from water savings, labor reduction, and regulatory compliance.

The high-end residential market is the next frontier. So far, regenerative DE has been used almost exclusively in the commercial sector, but that may change as:

• Water costs increase in residential areas.

• Luxury homeowners demand higher water quality without constant maintenance.

• Energy-efficiency rebates and drought incentives push consumers toward eco-upgrades.

Manufacturers are already exploring residential-scale regenerative DE systems and hybrid units that combine regenerative principles with glass media or cartridge tech. Some engineers envision future systems that monitor turbidity, auto-regenerate, and communicate via app — bringing the smart-home revolution poolside.

As sustainability moves from buzzword to building code, regenerative DE systems are setting the standard for eco-friendly filtration. While the price tag keeps them mostly in the commercial lane for now, growing demand for luxury, efficiency, and compliance suggests a residential shift is just around the corner.

For pool professionals, it’s a good time to get familiar with the tech. Because whether it’s a water park or a wellness estate, clear, clean, efficient filtration is the new luxury.
