Pool Pump Motor Compliance Check: Effective 9-29-2025

When replacing a pump motor, service pros should confirm the following before installation:

• Check the label. Verify motor horsepower, service factor, and THP (Total Horsepower) rating. Remember, THP = HP × Service Factor.

• THP threshold matters. 1.15–5.0 THP: Must be variable speed (as of Sept. 29, 2025).

0.5–1.15 THP: Must be variable speed beginning Sept. 28, 2027.

Below 0.5 THP: Not required to be variable speed, but must meet efficiency standards.

• Look for exemptions. Specialty motors such as waterfall pumps, rigid electric spa pumps, integral sand/cartridge filter pumps, and certain polyphase motors may be exempt.

• Check date of manufacture. Motors made before the compliance date may still be in circulation; installing them after the deadline could result in non-compliance.

• Document compliance. Keep records of the motor model and specifications in case of inspection or warranty issues.

• Educate customers. Be prepared to explain the higher upfront cost, long-term savings, and regulatory requirement for variable-speed technology.
