Recall on Ryobi pressure washers

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a major recall of approximately 764,000 Ryobi electric pressure washers due to a potential explosion hazard. The affected units were sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores nationwide from July 2017 through June 2024, with retail prices ranging from $300 to $400. An additional 16,000 units were sold in Canada.

Which models are affected? The recall specifically covers Ryobi models RY142300 and RY142711VNM.

These pressure washers are easily identifiable by their green and black color scheme and the “Ryobi” logo prominently displayed on the front. They include a spray nozzle, a detergent tank with a blue cap, and built-in accessory storage.

According to the CPSC, the pressure washers’ capacitor can overheat and explode, sending parts flying and posing a serious risk of injury.

Ryobi has received 135 reports related to the defect, including 41 instances of explosions that have resulted in 32 injuries affecting users’ fingers, hands, faces, and eyes.

What should owners do?

If you have one of the recalled pressure washers, stop using it immediately. Ryobi is offering a free repair kit that includes a replacement capacitor, along with shipping and installation instructions. Proof of purchase is not required. Remember:Even properly functioning power tools can present serious safety hazards. Owners are urged to act promptly to prevent injury.
