Ten firefighters were hospitalized this October responding to a twovehicle crash involving swimming pool cleaning chemicals in Bergen County, New Jersey.

The roll-over wreck involved a car and a minivan, containing “a plethora of swimming pool chemicals,” which occurred at about 9 p.m. on October 16 in Fairland.

The firefighters were exposed to hydrochloric acid and other pool chemicals while extricating the badly injured driver of the minivan.

The driver of the minivan was also hospitalized with serious but nonlife- threatening injuries. It was unclear whether the driver of the second vehicle required hospitalization, though reports indicate several occupants of both vehicles sustained varying degrees of non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals.

The minivan, which overturned after colliding with the passenger car, had been transporting large bottles of pool-cleaning chemicals, some of which were destroyed in the crash, causing the spill.

All 10 firefighters were released from the hospital the following day.

Authorities were working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
