According to the 2026 Service Industry News' Survey, Florida service professionals charge an average of $150 per month for onceweekly residential service, with nearly 100 percent reporting that this charge includes chemicals, while maintaining routes averaging about 100 pools.
By comparison, the rest of the Southeast reported an average monthly charge of about $300 for once-weekly service, with only 58 percent including chemicals in that charge, while also maintaining routes averaging about 100 pools, according to the 2026 Service Industry News' Survey.
Even accounting for those servicestructure differences, Florida has long operated as one of the country’s most aggressively competitive poolservice markets. And that may point to one of the industry’s biggest economic realities: The pool-service business increasingly operates through regional economic models rather than anything resembling a true national pricing structure.
At first glance, Florida pricing can appear surprisingly low.
Public pricing estimates in parts of Florida commonly cluster around roughly $150 per month for weekly residential service, although rates vary substantially depending on region, service inclusions, and route structure.
That pricing remains notably lower than the roughly $175 monthly average reported by many Southern California service professionals. Yet Florida’s business model often operates differently enough that direct comparisons can become misleading.
Compared with many open-air California pools, large numbers of Florida residential pools are:
• screened-in;
• relatively compact;
• lightly used;
• and located in dense suburban developments.
Screen enclosures can significantly reduce large leaf debris and windblown contamination while also allowing operators to move rapidly between densely packed residential stops. At the same time, Florida pools present their own operational challenges, including constant heat, year-round algae pressure, pollen, fine debris, storm cleanup, heavy rain dilution, geckos, insects, heavy bather loads, and nonstop seasonal demand.
While screened pools may reduce large debris, Florida’s year-round heat and algae pressure can still create extremely demanding chemicalmanagement conditions.
That means Florida service work often depends on rapid turnover, high route density, and relentless efficiency — and it is far from easy.
In fact, to maintain profitability, many Florida routes appear heavily dependent on speed, density, large account numbers, and operational efficiency, with some solo operators servicing 25 or more pools in a single day, compared with roughly 75 pools per week reported by many Southern California respondents in this year's survey.
In many parts of Central and South Florida, routes can be packed into extremely tight geographic areas with minimal drive time between stops. That density may allow operators to complete significantly more stops per day than may be practical in many California markets.
But the model may also require an extremely fast pace of work.
High pool counts can mean short average stop times, physically demanding summer schedules, nonstop year-round workloads, and limited margin for delays caused by weather, equipment failures, traffic, customer complaints, or chemical problems.
Florida operators may therefore rely on generating smaller profit margins across significantly larger account volumes.
At the same time, competition appears especially intense in many Florida markets.
Some operators report a constant stream of fly-by-night companies advertising basic or entry-level weekly service near — or even below — roughly $100 per month.
Many es tablished ser v ice professionals describe these prices as unsustainably low “bait pricing” that may temporarily undercut the market before the companies eventually disappear, reorganize, or leave the industry altogether. Long-term operators often argue that many ultralow- price competitors ultimately fail because the economics prove difficult to sustain over time.
Still, the constant appearance of ultra-low-price competitors can place continuing downward pressure on regional pricing structures.
Compared to California, Florida benefits from several broader economic differences.
Perhaps the most obvious is the absence of a state income tax.
California owner-operators must contend with federal income tax, self-employment tax, and California state income tax. Florida operators still face federal and self-employment taxes, but the absence of state income tax can create a meaningful difference in take-home income over time.
Housing costs remain lower in many Florida markets compared with coastal Southern California, a gap has narrowed considerably in recent years. In addition, many operators report substantially lower liquid chlorine pricing in Florida than elsewhere — sometimes still near roughly $2 per gallon in bulk commercial markets. Even modest differences in chemical pricing can become significant when spread across 100 or more pools per week.
At the same time, Florida is far from inexpensive. Insurance costs have risen sharply in many parts of the state, while housing prices increased dramatically during the pandemic-era migration boom. Hurricane exposure also creates financial uncertainty that many other markets do not face.
The broader point is not that one state has “better” economics than another.
Instead, the comparison highlights how dramatically the pool-service business model can vary by region.
A weekly-service price that appears sustainable in one market may look completely unrealistic in another once taxes, housing costs, route density, competition, chemical pricing, and workload are taken into account.
Florida’s lower pricing is real. But so is the relentless operational efficiency often required to make those numbers work long term.
