Interlock: Circulation stops = chems stop

The Minster pool incident highlights the importance of a safety feature known as an interlock.

In a properly designed aquatic circulation system, chemical feeders automatically shut off whenever water circulation stops. This prevents chlorine and acid from accumulating in pipes, where they can react to form chlorine gas or create highly concentrated chemical slugs that may be discharged into the pool when circulation resumes.

According to a Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) safety training video, 'the system is safe as long as water is circulating.' The video warns that 'if circulation stops but the chemicals continue to be injected, serious problems can occur.'

The video explains that interlocks can be accomplished through electrical connections between circulation pumps and chemical feeders, through flow switches that detect loss of water movement, or through dedicated safety switch systems that monitor and control both components together. In each case, the goal is the same: If circulation stops, chemical feed stops.

PHTA notes that mechanical failures, faulty sensors, or human actions that bypass safety systems can defeat these protections. The organization recommends regular testing of interlock systems and alarms, as well as staff training to recognize potentially dangerous situations.
