What is Polyurea?

Many readers have seen news reports describing the Reflecting Pool project as a paint job. In reality, the specified waterproofing system relies heavily on polyurea technology.

Polyurea is a spray-applied elastomeric coating created by combining two reactive components under high pressure and temperature. The material cures extremely rapidly and forms a durable, flexible membrane capable of waterproofing concrete and steel structures.

Pool and spa professionals may be familiar with polyurea from specialty applications such as splash pads, decorative water features, secondary containment systems, and certain commercial waterproofing projects. Outside the pool industry, polyurea is commonly used for water tanks, pipelines, wastewater facilities, truck bedliners, and industrial infrastructure.

Unlike conventional paint, polyurea is typically applied in highbuild thicknesses measured in mils (thousandths of an inch.) Depending on the application, industrial polyurea membranes may be applied at https://rhinolinings.com/

thicknesses ranging from a few tens of mils to well over 100 mils.

Advantages of polyurea include flexibility, crack-bridging ability, abrasion resistance, and excellent waterproofing performance. However, successful installation requires careful surface preparation, proper environmental conditions, and experienced applicators.

In the case of the Reflecting Pool, the polyurea membrane serves as the waterproofing layer, while the blue-tinted epoxy primer beneath it provides much of the visible coloration that has become the focus of public debate.
