Walk into almost any pool store and you'll see the latest robotic cleaners promising Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone apps, programmable cleaning cycles, and wall-to-waterline scrubbing. Manufacturers continue to add features, sensors, cameras, gyroscopes, and increasingly sophisticated navigation systems, all aimed at making pool cleaning more automated than ever before.
Today’s robotic pool cleaners offer numerous benefits for pool owners and service techs alike, trapping debris in their own filter basket instead of sending it to the pump basket and pool filter. That means less debris reaching the equipment and fewer filter cleanings.
Unlike suction cleaners, robots don't require pump flow or suction. A dirty filter, low RPM variablespeed pump, air leak, or plumbing restriction has little effect on the robot's cleaning ability. And unlike most pressure-side cleaners, robots don't require a dedicated booster pump, eliminating another motor, another seal, another timer, another electrical circuit, and another piece of equipment to maintain.
Yet ask a room full of veteran service technicians what automatic cleaner they trust most, and many will recommend machines that have been around for decades.

Some of these cleaners were designed before smartphones existed. One traces its roots to the 1970s. Another has remained largely unchanged for more than 40 years. Yet they continue to earn recommendations from professionals who make their living maintaining pools.
That raises an obvious question: Why?
The answer has less to do with cleaning performance than with reliability, repairability, and longterm value.
Consumers and manufacturers often evaluate automatic pool cleaners by asking a simple question: Which one cleans the best?
Service professionals usually ask a different one: Which one will still be cleaning five or ten years from now?
That's an important distinction. A cleaner that picks up 10 percent more debris today may not be the better investment if it requires expensive repairs every year.
